AI-Assisted vs AI-Native
AI-assisted is using the tools to do your existing work faster. It is real and worth having. AI-native is narrower and harder: knowing, before the handoff, which parts of the work carry judgment that lives only in you, and refusing to price those parts at the commodity rate. The AI-native engineer is not the person who uses AI most. It is the person who compounds judgment through AI.
Framework 6 of 10 · Chapter 6: The Confident Version
These two words are the spine of everything else on this site, and the distinction between them is smaller than it sounds.
AI-assisted is speed applied to work you already had. It is genuine, it is measurable, and it is where most engineers currently are. Nothing here argues against it.
AI-native is a judgment about where judgment lives. Before the handoff, you can say which parts of this work carry reasoning that exists only in your head, and you decline to price those parts as though they were commodity. The compounding comes from that second part, and from what you do about it.
When it applies
Before every delegation of consequence, and at every career decision, because the two positions have very different half-lives.
How to run it
The unit of becoming AI-native is smaller than people expect. It is one rule you own, with the reason written above it, your name and the date on it.
- Find something you own where the reason lives only in your head. One rule, one threshold, one strange constant.
- Write the reason where the next reader can find it. The next reader may not be a person.
- Do it again next week.
That is the whole mechanism. Judgment moved from a person into a place the work can reach, repeatedly, until the record is worth more than the output.
Where it fails
The output was excellent. The characteristic failure here is not bad generated code. It is very good generated code that is wrong in a way that required your specific history to see.
Knowing the words does not protect you. The vocabulary is usable in both directions. It is entirely possible to use the phrase "that part is commodity" to talk yourself out of the one review that needed you, and the sentence will sound disciplined while you do it.
Usage gets mistaken for maturity. Volume of tool use is not a position on this spectrum. Some of the most AI-assisted engineers in the industry are nowhere near AI-native, and they are the ones most confident that they are.
Practice
Find one thing you own where the reason lives only in your head. Write the reason down where the work happens, with the date and your name. One a week is a compounding schedule.
